Deb, wheel alignment doesn't really have anything to do with the wheels themselves. An alignment adjusts the hubs to guarantee that the wheels will be properly aligned once they are mounted. In fact, the alignment procedure is done while the wheels are removed from the vehicle.
Balancing ensures that the wheels themselves are properly balanced by adding weights to "light" spots on the rims.
