The power of the first step
“Take the first step, and your mind will mobilize all its forces to your aid. But the first essential is that you begin. Once the battle is started, all that is within and without you will come to your assistance.“
-–Robert Collier
I have a question for you: Are you a dreamer?
I mean are you someone who sits at times and thinks about what you'd love to accomplish in life?
Maybe you'd love to earn your GED and then attend college?
Or maybe you've always dreamed of starting your own business so you can work for yourself instead of for someone else?
Or perhaps you'd love to move your family into a bigger house in a safer neighborhood.
We all have goals that we'd love to reach some day, right?
Well, I'm going to give you a tip that can potentially help you reach any goal you have set for yourself...
Start working towards your goal right now.
Yes, I mean today.
It's impossible to accomplish anything worth accomplishing without actually taking whatever steps are required in order to make it happen. And in every case, with zero exceptions, that series of steps begins with the very first one.
Now here's the good news: The hardest step is usually the first one.
If we can just find it within ourselves to take that first step - to get the proverbial ball rolling - the next step will likely be easier.
And in all likelihood the steps that follow will be easier still.
While the next task on the list might not be easier to perform than the first, it might well be easier to accomplish simply due to the power of inertia.
Once you get a "ball" rolling it's always easier to keep it rolling than it was to get it started in the first place.
And that, in a nutshell, is why it's so important to just get started.
And now, back to our example goals...
Want to work towards earning your GED? Then take the first step by signing up for a class. You can find GED classes in most every city or town, and they are often tuition-free.
Want to start a business? Then start learning everything you can about running that kind of business and start saving a few dollars a month to build up a bit of seed money.
Want to move into a bigger house in a safer neighborhood? Then start saving up for a down payment and start working towards getting your credit situation squared away.
Working towards a goal doesn't have to be a sprint. Slow and steady will work, even if it takes a little longer than you'd like to achieve that goal.
But one thing is certain: You'll never reach your goal at all if you never take the first step and start working towards reaching it. Why not take it today?
