“I am a great enthusiast and early adopter of technology, but sometimes I wonder whether the inexorable integration of technology in our lives could diminish some of our quintessential human capacities, such as compassion and cooperation.“
----Klaus Schwab
I must say that I agree with Mr. Schwab on this point.
Technology has greatly improved the lives of us humans over the years. There is no doubt whatsoever about that.
But unfortunately it has had a negative effect on many of us as well.
The anonymity and long reach the Internet provides allows us to interact with people in ways that were unthinkable in years past.
We can now log onto Facebook and read something that someone clear across the country (or even the world) wrote that we disagree with.
Since it only takes a few seconds to reply to that post, we often do so without thinking through what we want to say. All too often that results in something being said that we would never say to someone to their face.
I've been guilty of this in the past, and chances are you have too. That doesn't make us bad people. It just means we're human.
Facebook makes it very easy to stay in touch with friends and loved ones. And all things considered, I think that's a great thing.
But it also makes it very easy to say things we don't mean (or to have the things we say interpreted in ways that we didn't mean).
Just a few keystrokes can ruin a friendship, and all it takes is a few seconds to send them.
Bottom line: All in all, I believe technology is a major blessing for mankind. But if it's used in a careless manner it can end up being a curse.
And always remember this...
